Elected members and staff at Hertsmere Borough Council and communities across the borough and further afield are deeply saddened by the news of the death of the Mayor of Hertsmere, Cllr Cynthia Barker.

Cynthia was appointed to the highly prestigious role as First Citizen of the borough in June 2020 and had served as Deputy Mayor for 2019/20. She had been a borough councillor representing Borehamwood and Potters Bar since 2015.

It says much about Cynthia’s commitment to her civic role that she was still undertaking her duties until very recently. In August, she lent her support to the Herts Pride virtual celebrations through a very touching and considered video clip for dissemination through Hertsmere Borough Council’s communications channels.

Cynthia became the first Philippine-born elected representative in the borough, and was proud of her heritage and committed to doing her utmost to champion equality and diversity for all communities in Hertsmere. She was chosen as one of the 100 most influential Filipinas by the Filipina Women’s Network.

Nothing was ever too much for Cynthia. She thrived at being a local councillor, always wanting to help residents with their issues.

She was a long-term supporter of the NSPCC and a committee member of the local Elstree and Borehamwood branch.

It was her intention to raise money for the NSPCC during her year as Mayor. Donations are welcome in her memory.

On behalf of my parents, Maria and Alan Carbon, we offer our deepest condolences to Mayor Barker's family and friends. They were close barkada at university, and even though they haven't seen each other for 30 years, they remained friends. Mayor Barker sounds like a formidable woman, and I thank her for raising the bar for all Filipinos around the world. Rest in peace.
